The Perfect Pineapple - MD2

And the award for the World’s Perfect Pineapple goes to…. (drum rolls, please) MD2

We’re not talking about MI2- the sequel to the super popular Mission Impossible franchise.  We’re talking about THE pineapple.  Originally named 73-114 back in 1961, MD2 pineapples have climbed the ranks and are now the preferred pineapple variety worldwide.  These sweet, super golden pineapples were named after Millie Dillard, the wife of the general manager of the Maui Pineapple company, but you can also call them “Sweet Gold” or “Golden Ripe.”

What makes these pineapples the cat’s meow?

  • Exceptional Sweetness

  • Uniform Size and Ripeness

  • 4x the Vitamin C of a regular pineapple

  • Longer Shelf Life

  • Produces double the amount of growth offshoots vs. a traditional pineapple resulting in double the yield

  • Versatility - they can be eaten fresh, frozen, and canned

but don’t take our word for it, our customers unequivocally agree that our pineapples are the best they’ve ever eaten.

NBD.

Available at Costco clubs under the brand Golden Farms, these sweet and delicious beauties have resulted in double digit increases every time they go into the freezer aisles when compared to your conventional Cayenne Pineapples

They prefer to grow in rich, volcanic soils, like those of Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, and Guatemala to name a few. Luckily, they aren’t too picky about soil pH or what degree of slope they are grown on - like their fussy cousins.

So how does Growers Favorite compete in this busy space?  We let our pineapples ripen as long as possible on the plant so each pineapple matures under the watchful eye of Mother Nature.  Other pineapples are picked when they are green (you’ve seen them in the store) and are expected to ripen in a cargo ship or on your kitchen counter.  Our pineapples are picked when they are golden inside and have reached the highest brix (aka sweetness) levels.  They are then quickly cut up and flash frozen to preserve all of their taste and goodness.

MD2 have also taken off in Malaysia- where the soil is rich and tropical.  Seeing a connection here to our previous fruit (check out our blog on dragon fruit, aka pitaya)?  Lots of monikers and global world travelers.

Very MI2.

So, the next time you’re whipping up a tropical smoothie or wowing a guest with the origins of your fruit salad - remember that if it’s not MD2, it’s not worth mentioning.
